A 'Kind Of' Commission for the Receptionist at Work | Illustration

Hey, there! It's January! Did you had a wonderful christmas and New Year? I love christmas and missed it for quite a while, I enjoyed it very much with my family, lovely presents and glorious christmas food!

Anyway!

I did the favour, feel like an design commission, kind of, for the receptionist at work. She would like an bedroom door sign for her young daughter as a personalised children's door sign. The design she wanted is a teddy bear on the side, with her daughter's name, she also showed me the size she wanted, that I measure it in 200mmx140mm.

Before I started to design, I did some sketches the concepts. Some body positions of the bear, such as standing, sitting, arm waving, and handlettering styles.

Then I started to use the Illustrator, I used Adobe Illustrator CC at work, to illustrate a teddy bear, in my spare time before going home. This had taken me few days, as 5 hours in my spare time. Here's a finished digital illustration.

The digital illustration was my first concept, so once I got home, I did another two illustrations, both in colour pencil except one with black ink pen. Here are the two photos of my hand drawn illustrations, even though it's not a good lighting quality as it was dark after i got home from work.

I also did the watercolour hand lettering, with many tried to pick the better ones. I'm not a skilled hand lettering but I tried my best, even though I enjoyed it very much. Instead of the usual waterpaint brush, I used waterbrush pen for hand lettering, it was actually easy without worrying the run out of water from the brush, even if i'm slow to paint or going long. Here's a photo of many attempts.

After that, I have scanned them, here are the clearer illustrations, as well as the hand lettering.

On the next day, I went to work, when i got some spare time, I hopped onto the computer and uploaded my scanned illustrations into Illustrator CC. I have experiment the rendered in Illustrator CC, to see if it's looks clean enough.

Once I had finished the digital illustration at that time, I designed altogether of each in final stage. I added in the corner marked with 10mm bleed all around and my signature in small text.

One of the designs had the most pick, can you guess which one is?

The result is...

The digital illustration!

After printed the illustration onto vinyl, laminated in matte. I used 2mm foamex and cut in 45 degree angle for wrapped edges, mounted vinyl onto foamex. And finally, applied the double sided tape at the back.

I handed to the receptionist, she gasped in amaze at my design and loved it. She showed her mother and told me the next day that her mother loved it too. My bedroom door sign illustration definitely looks sweet on her daughter's door.

Hope you all had a lovely weekend and thanks for reading!
